On the Road

There is nothing more exhilirating than going travelling - trekking through another country, experiencing a different culture, exploring new areas, sampling the local cuisine and chatting to the local people to gain a new perspective on life.

There are however certain things that you should be aware of and prepared for in order to make sure that your trip is as easy and enjoyable as possible. Acting responsibly and knowledgeably will not only enhance your travel experience but also help your hosts in making you more comfortable. To avoid any unnecessary hassles read the travel tips in this section to make the most of your travel experience and come home in a happy and safe state.

Tips:

  • Before departure find out about the latest information on your destination's regional stability, health and safety precautions and environmental issues. Most government foreign offices have up-to-date information
  • Make sure you have comprehensive travel insurance, before you leave, to cover baggage, flight cancellation, emergency medical care and if possible repatriation in case of emergency. Bear in mind that basic policies will not cover winter or extreme sports activities
  • Use ISIConnect to keep in touch with home and let family or friends know your travel plans
  • Make sure you have the correct travel and working visas, if needed, before going to a country. Without them you may be refused entry or have to pay over the odds at customs. Also make note of your visa expiry dates, you can extend visas in most places, failure to do so in certain countries could result in deportation, imprisonment or fines
  • For long stays in a country, register with your country's consulate or embassy upon arrival
  • Speak to other travellers, locals or tourist information offices about which areas are safe to visit and places to avoid
  • Obey the local laws, you can be imprisoned, fined or deported for offences that incur only a caution back home
  • Be cautious when hitchhiking, try not to hitchhike at night and if you must, always travel in pairs
  • Keep your passport, money and other important belongings in a secure place at all times. Be especially careful when you're out and about - the beach and crowded streets are favourite places for pickpockets
  • Make copies of your tickets, passport, insurance policy (plus 24-hour emergency number), itinerary and contact details and leave one at home or with friends as well as taking a copy for yourself
  • Don't keep all your money in one place and make sure you have noted the numbers of your travellers cheques so they can be replaced if they are stolen
  • Never have unsafe sex -use condoms
  • When it comes to drugs, be aware of the consequences. Using drugs abroad can carry heavy penalties, including the death sentenceIf you are going to drink alcohol, know your limit. Accidents are more likely after using alcohol or drugs and as well as the pain and embarrassment, you're unlikely to be covered by your insurance
  • Make sure any wildlife souvenirs or products can be legally taken out of the country and legally imported back home. Some wildlife souvenirs are banned from international trade, many more require special permits from the country of export, failure to do so may result in the confiscation of the product
  • Never carry packages through customs for other people, always pack your own baggage and never leave it unattended
